Private Estate, West Country

Having already supplied this fantastic estate with a mix of buxus hedging and taxus topiary plants from our own stock, on several occasions, the owner spotted some stunning ball standards – while returning on a helicopter flight – and tasked his Estate Team to source something similar.

We recommended an alternative to the ‘common’ ball standard topiary, instead recommending 450cm high exquisite standards. With 175cm cubes and a stirdy 16-18cm stem girth, the owner couldn’t have been happier with the concept. We put together a video series and took a collection of quality photographs – allowing accurate representation of the plants and saved the customer having to leave home to travel to the nursery.

In total, the estate had fourteen of the taxus (yew) cube standards plus a substantial amount of field grown (root balled) and pot grown yew at both 180-200cm and 200-220cm for instant boundary hedging protection. Today they sit guarding the house entrance and formal gardens in the most beautiful position imaginable!

Country Home, West Sussex

This minimalist design was and, still is striking. Taxus topiary in any form is complimented by the kind of warm tones found here – the Cheltenham chippings over the new membrane completed the look really well. In the rear garden we supplied quercus ilex, taxus and prunus lusitanica hedging. The taxus (yew) topiary balls and cones were the main feature of a simple and clean landscape, complimented by the views of the pool and open countryside.

Private Estate, Northamptonshire

A substantial and relatively new twelve hundred acre estate near Silverstone was in the process of adding shape and boundary planting to a dynamic scheme – that would take eighteen months to complete. The in-house team had been hard at work bringing new gardens and features to life (with the added complexity of stopping the 1,000 rare breed deer eating it!) and were creating a particular garden needing some height and shape visible from the owner’s main rooms.

Following an onsite meeting we established that taxus baccata (yew) was the main requirement for the large topiary domes being placed near the west wing. Complimented by yew hedging of 150-175cm, 125-150cm, 60-80cm and some common cherry laurel (prunus l. Rotundifolia).

The 400cm yew domes were unloaded and swiftly moved to position, where a blend of locally sourced fresh manure and quality top soil were added to the area for planting.

The customer was seeking a feature garden that brought instant shape, form and shadow at different times of the day – something successfully achieved with these glorious yew domes.

RHS Chelsea, London

Over the years we have supplied several gardens for RHS events. This one, with its quirky and contemporary ‘user spaces’ is our favourite though! The requirement was for a large amount of buxus sempervirens (box) balls in 75cm diameter size plus, a large volume of lavender shrubs – an articulated trailer load to be exact on shelves 4 tiers high.

The designer wanted to create a dynamic ‘field’ of moving grass like plants – surrounded by contrasting shape in the box balls and the lifestyle / living space pods. To have the lavender in best condition it was sourced from the warmest possible climate and with an unofficial hope it would flower during the show. Alas, this never happened and, even as non-flowering expensive grass, it won Gold!

The Topiary & Hedging Co. has also sponsored a young garden designer in the past for their first garden at Hampton Court – supplying them ‘at cost’ plants to help them meet their budget challenges. Again, this tremendous garden was another Gold winner.
